Building the Institutions of CALIBRATION

We reveal how Serani built the world of this film.

WORLD-BUILDING

One of the greatest challenges in science-fiction filmmaking is creating a world that feels real beyond the boundaries of the screen.

By the time a character walks into an office, signs a document, visits a hospital, or receives a message on their phone, entire systems have already been imagined by the filmmakers. Histories have been written. Organisations have been designed. Rules have been established. Most of this work never appears directly on screen, yet it plays a critical role in making a fictional world feel authentic.

As development of CALIBRATION continues, director Serani Hunyi has been focused on building two of the film's most important institutions: Harbor and Novum Labs.

Although audiences will encounter both institutions through the experiences of the film's protagonist, Freya Hollister, each represents a very different vision of the future.

Novum Labs presents itself as a leader in advanced data analysis, behavioural systems, and emerging technologies. The company recruits exceptional minds to work on highly specialised projects, often operating behind layers of confidentiality and corporate secrecy. To the outside world, it appears innovative, prestigious, and highly desirable. Beneath the surface, however, questions begin to emerge about the relationship between knowledge, power, and control.

Building the Institutions of CALIBRATION

Harbor occupies a very different space within the world of the film.

Publicly, Harbor is celebrated as a breakthrough medical institution known for its pioneering Neurological Calibration Program™. Widely praised for its work with autism and trauma-related conditions, Harbor represents a future in which neurological intervention has become increasingly accepted as a solution to complex human challenges. The organisation is professional, compassionate, and highly respected. Yet, as with many institutions in CALIBRATION, the most important questions lie not in what Harbor claims to do, but in the broader implications of its success.

For Serani, creating these organisations required far more than simply designing logos or creating fictional company names.

"I wanted these institutions to feel real enough that they could exist tomorrow. Their websites, branding, communications, and documentation all needed to reflect a future that feels familiar rather than fantastical. The world of CALIBRATION isn't built around dramatic technological leaps. It's built around gradual acceptance. That's what makes it interesting."

As part of the production's world-building process, Serani has developed extensive supporting materials for both organisations, including internal documentation, public-facing communications, informational resources, branding systems, patient materials, and corporate identities.

These elements help create a deeper sense of immersion while supporting the film's central themes around autonomy, technology, emotional complexity, and institutional influence.

Rather than limiting this world-building to what appears on screen, CALIBRATION has extended both organisations beyond the film itself. Harbor and Novum Labs have been developed as functioning public-facing entities, complete with their own web pages, communications, and supporting materials. Visitors are invited to explore these organisations as they would in the real world, offering a deeper glimpse into the systems and institutions that shape the universe of CALIBRATION.

Explore Harbor
A government-supported medical institution specialising in neurological intervention and the Neurological Calibration Program™.

Explore Novum Labs
A private technology company operating at the forefront of advanced data systems and behavioural research.

As production progresses, additional materials from within the world of CALIBRATION will continue to be released, gradually revealing more of the institutions, technologies, and ideas that shape the film's near-future society. Not everything exists on screen. Some parts of the story are waiting to be discovered.
